Internal Family Systems
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a non-pathologizing approach to psychotherapy that gives language to the multifaceted nature of our minds. IFS views the various aspects of our personalities as parts that interact within our inner world. According to the model, it is common for parts to become stuck in extreme roles, unintentionally causing pain in their efforts to protect and soothe. These extreme roles can lead to emotional distress, anxiety, depression, struggles in relationships, unhelpful behavior patterns, and more. Through IFS sessions, we can provide opportunities to alleviate the pressure beneath these extreme roles and offer the possibility of relief.
Examples of possible protective parts include: “The part of me that…
overthinks"
avoids conflict”
is self-critical"
wants me to be perfect”
people pleases"
As an IFS-Trained therapist, I aim to offer genuine compassion and curiosity throughout sessions, creating space for the most steadfast protective parts and the most tender wounded parts to be heard and understood.
Below are some goals of IFS sessions, from my perspective:
Gain insight into how protective parts manifest in your everyday life
Learn how protective parts interact and reduce inner conflict
Connect with and witness wounded parts that hold pain
Release deep-rooted patterns at your own pace
